ColoringbooksThe benefits of coloring have been in the news lately, particularly in terms of how coloring can be a stress relief for adults. I am not embarrassed to admit that I love coloring with my nieces and nephews and I get a lot of joy from taking the time to sit with them when coloring together.

Some of the benefits of coloring for children that psychologists have discovered are:

  1. The improvement of motor skills
  2. Preparing children for school
  3. Stimulating creativity
  4. Contributes to better handwriting
  5. Contributes to color awareness, recognition and discernment
  6. Improved focus and hand to eye coordination
  7. Setting boundaries, enhancing concepts of structure and spacial awareness
  8. Improves confidence and self-esteem
  9. Contributes to self-expression
  10. Can be therapeutic and a stress reliever

About Layla Abdullah-Poulos

Layla Abdullah-Poulos is an alumna of SUNY Empire State College with a Bachelor of Arts in Historical Studies and Literature and is presently a student in the School for Graduate Studies. She expects to complete her studies and receive a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies and Advance Certificates in Women and Gender Studies and American Studies by 2016. An aspiring academic, Abdullah-Poulos uses her knowledge not only to develop her own scholarship but also that of other SUNY Empire State College students.
